Our Story

Our Mission

We strive to protect the ocean against industrialization. A healthy ocean is one of our best defenses against climate change. By protecting the ocean and marine biodiversity, we can help safeguard the planet for future generations.

Our History

In January 2023, a group of non-partisan, grassroots community members came together to found Green Oceans. Our purpose was clear from the start: preserve the health of the ocean and all the life it sustains.

Our Values

We recognized the urgent need for advocacy when we discovered the government’s plan to industrialize 1400 square miles of ocean waters with 1000 plus offshore wind turbines off the coasts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts–an enormous change that will irrevocably harm this fertile yet fragile marine ecosystem.

Our Concerns

The US Department of Interior (BOEM) does NOT anticipate offshore wind projects will significantly help combat climate change. Yet, the plan to industrialize 1400 square miles of pristine ocean with over 1000 wind turbines–all taller than any building in Boston–moves forward. Why risk the destruction of the marine ecosystem, when official documents indicate the projects will have “no collective impact”? (Vineyard Wind FEIS, Vol 2, page A-66)

Our Commitment

As citizens dedicated to protecting the ocean and all of the life it sustains–from the largest whale to the smallest plankton–we pledge to share scientific facts and truthful information with the public. We invite you to join our cause to learn more about how you can help defend the ocean and support a healthier planet.

Our Information

Over the past year, we have presented scientific evidence about threats to the ocean from the government's own Environmental Impact Assessments.

Our Legal Fight

Green Oceans Leads 35 Co-plaintiffs in Lawsuit

After submitting multiple comments to BOEM, NOAA, and the state, we have finally escalated our efforts to protect the ocean by filing a Federal Lawsuit.

The U.S. Government ignores multiple laws

We allege the U.S. Government (BOEM) violated the National Environmental Protection Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, Endangered Species Act, Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, National Historic Preservation Act, and the Clean Water Act when it approved the two offshore wind projects located off Martha’s Vineyard and Rhode Island.

The Wampanoags of Aquinnah join our lawsuit

The U.S. Government’s approvals will desecrate sacred lands and rights of the Wampanoag tribe.
